One day after my weekly weigh-in, and I receive a package in the mail. I ordered a few (non grocery) items recently online and I was glad to see the package. Tell you the truth, I'm always glad to see a package. Anyway, I opened it right away, removed the contents and on the bottom was a free gift. Actually, it was a free trial for two new "health" bars called, Slimful. Oh, that's nice. Just in time to help me in my weight loss way.
These bars are supposed to help you lose weight. It says on the wrapper that it is only 90 calories, gluten free, and "satisfies hunger for hours". It's got to be good, right? And the first one I see is labeled Cocoa Brownie. That's it, I've got to try it! Wait a minute... after closer inspection it also says, naturally and artificially flavored. Now why would a bar highlight that it has artificial flavors in it? Answer... because it has to, by law. And you should also know that "naturally flavored" is usually a hint that it is made with sugar and/or corn syrup. I mean, sugar comes from a plant and corn syrup, of course, comes from corn. What's wrong with that? It's natural! Yeah, and over processed! Two of many things you should stay away from, if you are trying to lose weight. You should stay away from these things even if you are not trying to lose weight, along with white flour. Please, stop the madness!
Okay, back to this "health" bar. On the back is the ingredients, but where? I don't see them. You've got to fold the little flap up to see them. What are they trying to hide? Let's see! Oh great! I should say, Oh hate! First ingredient... sugar! Second ingredient... corn syrup! Third... maltodextrin, which is an artificial sweetener. This is crazy! Fourth is cocoa powder and many other ingredients, including artificial flavor. What is this stuff? A high-priced, glorified, flat tootsie roll?!
To top it all off, the wrapper highlights that it is low in sodium(salt). 85 mg of salt... not exactly low! Don't be deceived! Stay away from stuff like this! This is just another gimmick, fad, diet helper, etc., trying to get your money. Let me tell you what is cheaper and much better! Fruits and vegetables! Like I said before, "Stop the madness!" Drink water, eat whole grains, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Yes, there is more on the menu than that, but that is mostly it. It's not rocket science. Be wise, and don't be deceived.
