Eating Matters

In our family, learning the right eating habits is a very important part of daily life. After all, what goes in your body affects almost every aspect of your life - physically, mentally, and long-term. So it's very important that what goes inside your body is worth putting there!

Food for Thought

It can be quite a challenge to keep up with demand when there are sixteen mouths to feed! When we were growing up, Dad would make regular trips to the store to keep the food bins stocked and the refrigerators full. We had two full size freezer/refrigerators and two small fridges besides. We also had two large chest freezers which stayed stocked with frozen fruit, veggies, fish and meat. Dad always had a knack for finding where all the best deals were and saving money, even though we bought only healthy choices. Whenever he found a really good deal, he took the opportunity to stock up, and any extras would go in the freezers for use in the coming months. But nothing stayed stocked for long! One time there was a fantastic sale on shredded wheat cereal. Dad bought boxes and boxes of the stuff - every time he went to the store he would completely clear the shelves. When the sale had ended the closet pantry was packed with boxes of cereal- probably close to about 80 boxes in all. We were sure that we would have cereal well into the following year, but it didn't even last through the summer!

Final count: Bananas = 958, Plantains = 76

No, this is not a picture from a grocery store. These are stacked on the table in our kitchen!

Believe it or not, these bananas did not even last a month. Of course, some were frozen to be used throughout the summer in smoothies and frozen shakes. But less than a month from the time this photo was taken, the table was empty! And not even one banana went to waste.
